Design’s Next Chapter: From Artefacts to Governance in an AI World

As AI reshapes how organisations operate, the gravitational centre of design is shifting fast: from crafting artefacts to structuring agency, from user flows to governance systems, from surface to strategy. This is not a crisis—it’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

In this opening keynote, Marzia Aricò and Giulio Frigieri will argue that design is entering its most critical and strategic chapter yet. No longer confined to execution, design now sits at the interface between AI, ethics, policy, and organisational decision-making. It is becoming the connective tissue between systems and stakeholders, complexity and clarity, machines and meaning.

The future of design isn’t about defending relevance—it’s about redefining value. To thrive, designers must move beyond screen thinking and embrace systems thinking. We must learn to render the invisible visible, prototype policies, embed ethics at the point of action, and become indispensable to how intelligent systems are governed.

This is a call to action for those ready to lead. Not by filling gaps, but by creating new conditions for responsible innovation. The next frontier isn’t design-as-craft—it’s design-as-infrastructure

Giulio Frigieri
Giulio Frigieri AI Governance, Design Leadership
Independent

Giulio Frigieri has over twenty years’ experience at the intersection of data, systems and ethics. Trained as a Human Geographer, he built a career in information and service design, creative digital strategy, and AI governance. His work spans award-winning data journalism at The Guardian and innovation initiatives with the UN Environment Programme, Human Rights Watch, Merck, Virgin Unite, GSK, Accenture Song and Nesta Foundation. As a PhD candidate and independent researcher, Giulio explores how design, understood as mapping and governance, can bridge the principle–implementation gap in AI systems. This builds on his experience helping organisations operationalise Responsible AI and manage complex transformations. A board member of the Italian Coalition for Civil Liberties and Rights (CILD) and an active participant in global responsible innovation networks, he applies a systems-thinking approach that blends strategic insight with ethical depth, shaping more resilient and values-driven futures.
