Agentic AI may fundamentally change the role of Enterprise Design. As agents become more capable, enterprises may depend more heavily on explicit enterprise representations—or increasingly rely on inference to reconstruct them on demand. This session explores what those two futures could mean for the discipline.

Agents acting on behalf of an enterprise require exactly the things enterprise design is intended to provide: shared meaning, organizational direction, authority, constraints, and accountability. At the same time, they are becoming increasingly capable of generating many of enterprise design’s traditional outputs—current-state models, process maps, inventories, and documentation—from operational systems and telemetry rather than maintained repositories.

Which future emerges depends on two strategic questions. Does agentic work become fundamental to enterprise operation, or remain incremental? And does reliable agentic work require governed enterprise representations, or can agents reconstruct sufficient context on demand? Together, these questions define four plausible futures, each with profoundly different implications for enterprise design.

Using a concrete EDGY model of an agentic product, this session explores those four scenarios, identifies the indicators that suggest which future may be emerging, and tests how well EDGY can represent an enterprise in which agents increasingly act on the organization’s behalf. The discussion then considers what those findings imply for enterprise design, how enterprise designers might recognize which future is unfolding, and whether EDGY’s current design ontology provides the concepts needed to model authority, constraints, and legitimate action in the agentic enterprise.
